Atlanta Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-75 Travelers
Timing is Everything: Avoid I-75 through downtown Atlanta between 6-10am and 3-7pm on weekdays if at all possible. The "Connector" (where I-75 and I-85 merge downtown) becomes a parking lot. If you must travel during rush hour, consider the I-285 bypass around the city.
Stay in the Middle Lanes: The left lanes are often HOV/express lanes with restricted access during peak hours (and hefty fines for violations). The right lanes have constant merging traffic. The middle lanes typically flow best through the metro area.
Watch for Sudden Lane Shifts: The downtown Connector has some confusing lane configurations where through-lanes suddenly become exit-only lanes with minimal warning. Stay alert around the I-75/I-85 split and the I-20 interchange. GPS helps, but signs can be misleading.
Fill Up Before or After: Gas stations right off I-75 in metro Atlanta are typically overpriced. Fill up in the suburbs (Kennesaw/Acworth to the north or McDonough/Locust Grove to the south) for better prices.
