Gainesville Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-75 Travelers
Avoid Peak Times Around UF: I-75 passes right by the University of Florida. Traffic gets significantly worse during: - Football game days (Saturdays in fall) - especially 3 hours before/after games - Weekday rush hours (7:30-9am, 4:30-6pm) when students commute - Move-in/move-out weeks (late August, early May).
Speed Trap Zones: Watch your speed especially: - Through the Alachua/Gainesville stretch (MM 390-399) - Construction zones are heavily patrolled. FHP is very active on this corridor.
Paynes Prairie Rest Stop (Mile Marker 374): One of Florida's best rest areas on the southbound side. Clean facilities, and you might spot wild horses or bison grazing in Paynes Prairie State Park visible from the highway. Worth the stop if you need a break.
Weather Awareness: Afternoon thunderstorms are intense June-September (2-5pm). This stretch is exposed with poor drainage in spots. Slow down significantly when it's pouring - visibility drops to near zero quickly.
