Time your drive around UK traffic: If passing through during University of Kentucky game days (especially football Saturdays in fall), expect major delays from Exit 104-115. Even regular weekday rush hours (7:30-9am, 4:30-6:30pm) get congested through downtown.
Watch for the "Lexington Merge": Where I-75 and I-64 split (around Exit 113), traffic can get chaotic with sudden lane changes. Stay alert and get in your lane early—locals know this bottleneck well.
The "Newtown Pike shortcut" works: If traffic is jammed, locals use Exit 115 to Newtown Pike (US-922) as a parallel route that reconnects at Exit 120. Can save you 20+ minutes during backups.
Fill up gas before the Tennessee border: Kentucky gas is typically cheaper than Tennessee. The last convenient exits with good prices are 95 (Berea) or 90 (Renfro Valley) heading south.
