The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced its Comprehensive Strategy for the I-75/I-40 Corridor in Loudon and Knox Counties to tackle congestion issues in Knoxville and surrounding areas. TDOT’s 10-Year Plan includes funding for the interchange at I-40 and Watt Road, corridor improvements, and preliminary engineering of the Sharps Gap Interchange, all integrated into the new strategy

By adopting a holistic approach, TDOT aims to address long-term needs and maximize investment value. The 17-mile congested stretch between Loudon County’s I-75 split and Knox County’s I-640 split sees over 205,000 vehicles daily.

The strategy focuses on preliminary engineering over the next 18 to 24 months to enhance corridor throughput and reduce travel times, targeting significant areas like interchanges, weigh stations, and potential future Choice Lanes.

TDOT plans to leverage funds and apply for grants to support the project’s development and funding strategy.

The comprehensive approach aims to transform one of Tennessee’s busiest interstate sections, benefitting communities and improving infrastructure for years to come.

Local officials express enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to enhance safety and quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
