The American Automobile Association (AAA) estimates that 122.4 million Americans will travel over 50 miles from their homes during the year-end holidays, from December 20 to January 1. This is a 2.2% increase from last year, breaking the previous record of 119.7 million travelers. Stacey Barber from AAA Travel notes that people celebrate the holidays in different ways, but many plan to travel, either heading home or visiting new places.
Most of these holiday travelers, 109.5 million, will be driving, up 2% from last year. Road trips are popular due to convenience and affordability. This year, 89% of people prefer holiday traveling by car. Gas prices are lower compared to last year, with the national average dropping below $3 per gallon for the first time in four years.
With so many holiday travelers on the road, AAA advises holiday travelers to be cautious. December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, reminding everyone to drive safely. AAA and MADD encourage safe travel planning during this busy and risky time on the roads.
Last year, AAA provided emergency roadside service to over 860,000 stranded drivers during the holiday season. As a safety measure, AAA urges everyone to slow down and move over for stopped vehicles to ensure responders can work safely.
For those renting cars, Hertz, AAA’s car rental partner, expects December 20 to be the busiest rental day. High-demand locations include Orlando, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami, and Phoenix. Small SUVs are the most popular rental choice, and rental prices are 1% higher than last year according to AAA bookings.
